Dr Euan Lindsay

Senior Lecturer

Program Leader, Mechatronic Engineering

Euan has been at Curtin since the beginning of 2004. His primary research area is engineering education, in particular remote and virtual access to laboratory hardware. He presently teaches in the "core" Mechatronic areas of the curriculum, supervising units where students actually create integrated mechatronic systems involving computers, electronics and physical hardware. Euan has a strong profile internationally in the area of Engineering Education, and is the recipient of a number of awards in this field.

Euan is presently on Sabbatical with Virginia Tech's Department of Engineering Education.

Awards:

In 2008, Euan recieved the “2008 DELOS  Best Paper Award” from the Division of Experimental and Laboraory Oriented Studies of ASEE.

In 2007, Euan was awarded the Carrick Institute's Early Career Award for Teaching Excellence. The press release can be seen here.

In 2006, Euan (with co-author Malcolm Good) received the IEEE Education Society's Transactions on Education Best Paper Award.

In 2005 Euan was chosen as one of the 30 Most Inspirational Young Engineers in Australia.

Research interests:

Engineering education, in particular:

Artificial dextrous hands for sign language, incorporating:

  • Artificial Neural Networks for Trajectory Control
  • Hand design & implementation
  • Feedback control of Air muscles

Euan also collaborates with the Insitute for Multi-Sensor Processing and Content Analysis (IMPCA), primarily in the area of data mining of educational data.

Undergraduate Teaching:

Semester One: Mechatronic Automation 331, Mechatronic System Design 431 and Engineering Foundations: Principles & Communications 100

Semester Two: Mechatronic Project 322 and Engineering Foundations: Principles & Communications 100

Euan supervises a number of students in the final-year Mechatronic Project 491 / 493. Projects for 2008 include:

  • Motion tracking of pilots in flight simulators
  • Automated store mannequin that can track shoppers
  • Voice-controlled mobile robots
  • Artificial hand for sign language

Previous years' projects include:

Postgraduate Teaching:

Euan supervises four PhD students:

  • Peter Scarfe, working on Artificial Neural Networks for Trajectory Control
  • Matt Ramage, working on producing audio transcripts via image processing techniques on pure video
  • Dan Arthur, working on infrared-based sensing for Brain-Computer Interfaces
  • Josh Portlock (on leave), working on multi-rotor helicopter stability & trajectory control

Euan is always looking for potential candidates who are motivated and keen to work in applying artificial intelligence techniques to meaningful contexts such as rehabilitative engineering. He is also keen to expand his own engineering education work on remote and virtual laboratory classes through the recruitment of postgraduate students.

Publications:

Euan has a number of publications in the field of engineering education, specialising in Remote and Virtual access to laboratory hardware. Thus far his publications record includes:

  • 1 PhD Thesis
  • 1 Book Chapter
  • 4 Journal Papers
  • 20+ Refereed Conference Papers
  • Assorted other presentations & workshops.

University Service :

Euan is actively involved in a number of projects and initiatives at Curtin University of Technology:

The Australasian Association for Engineering Education:

Euan is a member of the Executive of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education. He is the coordinator of it's New Academics Peer Support Network, as well as a co-editor of the Australasian Journal of Engineering Education.

Public Presentations:

Euan believes strongly in presenting his work, and the broader discipline of engineering, to the general public. He (often in combination with his students) has given a number of public presentations and displays of his work:
