Research in Mechanical Engineering

In research terms, the Department of Mechanical Engineering is still young; however, its research profile is set to grow. Already it is internationally competitive in selected areas. All members of its staff are now active in research. The research conducted ranges from that of a fundamental nature through to that which is strongly applications-driven (and which may be industrially sponsored). An emerging strength of the Department is its ability to form and work in multidisciplinary teams.

Our current areas of research interest are as follows (click on a selected title for details of illustrative projects):

Fluids and Heat

(recent publications)

Appropriate technology

Biomechanics

Flow-structure interaction

Fluid Dynamics

Heat Transfer

Mechatronics

(recent publications)

Mechatronics/Robotics

Modular and industrial automation

Solids

(recent publications)

Materials

Vibration and noise

Research-student projects are available in these areas and applications in these, and related topics, are welcomed. (See, also, the 'Postgraduate Study' pages.) At present, approximately 20 research students are being supervised by academic staff of the department.

See our recent publications (since 1997).
